Welcome to the exploration of this sock, originally from Egypt, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This website traces the methods and materials that went into its creation, as well as its use and later relocation to the museum. Many of the histories involved are murky due to records that may have been lost or simply never created. The origins of indigo, cotton, and knitting are all heavily reliant on those archaeological fragments that have survived to be tested in the past few decades and comparison with contemporary writings, though they are vague at times.

This website was created in 2023 by Caroline Montague for the course “Digital Archaeological Heritage” at the Bard Graduate Center.
